There have been a number of locations all around Dublin for the Dublin International Hostel. From Mountjoy Square, Morehampton Road, Mount Merrion Avenue, Harcourt Street, and now its current address here at 61 Mountjoy Street.
Built over 150 years ago, it was known as the St Joseph's female orphanage and convent and was run by the Sisters of Charity. In the later years it became St Joseph Girl's School that was still run by the nuns. The Church was still being used by local residents right up until it was closed in 1988.
An Óige, the Irish Youth Hostelling Association, brought the buildings and converted it into its Head Office and also the Dublin International Hostel, officially opening on the 16th September 1989.
Whilst there have been a number of facelifts, the overall purpose of this building remains the same in that we still accommodate people but of an international mix.
